5th August: How can we encourage people into our churches 2005/08/05 10:51
This discussion is picked up from a thread on the Churches Board.

The original discussion is located here and was an article that appeared in the monthly ezine by Gerald O'Hara.

Today's discussion....

For church leaders: How can we improve our Spiritualist Churches and encourage more people to take part in our activities.

For non-church leaders: What can our Churches do to encourage you to take a more active part

Todays discussion topic is ....

What do you think is the most important 'tool' in helping someone else to develop mediumship or psychic abilities? What helped you the most?

I would say lots of encouragement for them to find their own voice and way of working.
It's difficult when starting out in anything, you tend to model yourself on someone until you find your own feet. with this work because it's evolving xonstantly - it's important to feel comfortable with 'you' from the begining. Also although we all do similar work, we all have different purposes for our readings and it's important to find out what your own purpose is.

Hello

A few years back I was given the name of a well known medium from a member of a UK Spiritual Church. The medium did not do private readings often. When she did, it was only when there was a solid reason for her to do so.

She gave me a reading because she felt I needed help. I did indeed, as my husband had suffered a severe accident, and I was at my wits end to know what to do.

She was 100 percent accurate in her reading. At the end of the reading I asked how much should I donote for her time.

She said:

"Nothing. This is not my profession. I treat my mediumship as a gift. I use it only to help people like you."

Wonderful words from an elderly lady living on a meager pension.

She spoke about how important it was to use your gift to help others. As she said "mediumship is something that belongs to all. We are here on Earth to help each other not to take from each other."

Before I left I gave a small donation to go towards her favourite charity.

Her last words as I was leaving the room:

"Until true compassion is learnt, sadly we will not advance far."

This wonderful lady was a real inspiration to me. I felt truly helped my her.

May I add at the time my husband was not working and there was little money to spare.

Thank God she was not asking for a large fee.

until later

Yvonne

The most important thing that has helped me, and has been taught in a few of the classes and workshops I have attended, is the reduction or removal of limitations. This covers many aspects such as: Removal of ignorance by the acquiring knowledge of how the universe, body, mind and spirit function, including the different types of mediumship. Removal of personal blocks, by taking a look at my own beliefs and assumptions and eliminating those that no longer serve me. Removal of comparison to others and their abilities and accepting myself where I am right now. Removal of fear of the unknown and lack of confidence and replacing it with unconditional love, compassion and esteem.

Although this approach may seem to some like a lot of work or that it is coming from a different angle, it really has provided a strong foundation of self-confidence in many personal ways in addition to the development of the gifts of psychic awareness and mediumship I possess.

Off and on for years, with little success, I had sat in unfoldment and development classes that dove right in and did not approach or work toward exposing many of the aformentioned limitations, especially my beliefs and fears. I began to think that I would not be able to develope beyond gentle sensitivity. Once I was able to look inside my own set of rules and regulations, follow their effect in my life, and gain an understanding that had meaning and could be applied, the blocks I set up began to slowly and comfortably be removed, allowing my gifts to begin to blossom.

Of course, everbody is unique, and they are at different levels of understanding and acceptance. This is merely what helped me the most. Others may find this approach cumbersome or needless. Yet, I can only assist, teach or encourage others form the tools I have collected and try to meet them where they are at with compassion, empathy, and support.

The student says to the master "what is the way"?

The master replies "Attention."

The student says "yet master, what is the way??"

The master replies "Attention, Attention."

The student says, "master! yet you still haven't told me the way?"

Then the master says "Attention? Attention. Attention!"

Then the student understood and found enlightenment.

This applies with all things, you never know when somebody needs you, so pay attention!

Active listening ~ not only listen but HEAR them........and give them as much assurance as they need that they aren't crazy or bad or some kind of mutant. Unless someone was as blessed as I was to be raised in an enviroment where abilities were considered as natural as breathing, then those first mannifestations of abilities, from what I've been told, carry the possibility of being rather disconcerting. I shudder to think of how I would have reacted the first time I had a manifestation if I had been told any number of things that others had been told!

OK

Turning this on its head, if I may.

As an example:
I have absolute faith in this.
Plenty of quiet and retrospective time.

I can feel auras and blocks in energy, I have minor psychometry skills, I read the tarot a bit, read photos and sometimes I just know things - all psychic stuff.

Sometimes I see/hear/smell things and get messages for people but only like detailed snapshots - mediumship stuff.

No church, no relatives into this, no current contact with anyone, not even an online chatroom, for development.

Gimme an exercise! What can I do as an isolated individual with weak or undeveloped skills?

Maybe my skills are extended to their fullest already - but I don't know that, so neither do I know whether I have them for any more purpose than this.

What is the one practice/discipline you would recommend to someone alone at home?

(P.S. If its a generic answer like 'meditation' - then on what?) :hammer:

For Idano....

We did an exercise in the chat rooms once where everyone had to go away that night, grab a piece of paper and write the following....

A description of any person who came to mind
Any information about their name, job, family etc.
Things about their personality that you noticed
A message from them

Once this was done, the following day everyone placed what they had written on the boards.

Would you beleive that ALL the students were beginners and 90% of what was placed on the message boards was taken by other students.

We made them prove that it was indeed a message for them and not just oooooo that sounds like my auntie etc.

So maybe one day we will try this out ... all in favour say 'aye' and we will all have a go over the weekend.

By the way its called 'Advance Mediumship' and was taught to me by a teacher of mine. You'd be amazed how accurate it is.
